Wisdom Teeth and Removal
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are the last permanent teeth to develop, typically emerging between the ages of 17 and 25. While some individuals experience no issues, many face complications because the jaw often lacks the space to accommodate these extra teeth. As a result, wisdom teeth can become impacted (trapped beneath the gums), grow in at awkward angles, or only partially emerge. These issues can lead to pain, swelling, infection, damage to nearby teeth, and difficulties with cleaning, which may increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Although not every case requires removal, wisdom tooth extraction is often recommended to prevent future oral health problems. Signs you may need extraction include jaw discomfort, inflammation, crowding, or evidence of impaction on X-rays—even if symptoms haven’t appeared yet.
At Clark Family Dental, wisdom teeth removal is a common outpatient procedure performed with your comfort as a priority. Before the procedure, we’ll review your health history, take necessary imaging, and offer sedation options like local anesthesia or nitrous oxide to keep you relaxed. During the treatment, the area is fully numbed, the tooth is gently removed, and stitches may be used to support healing. The procedure typically takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on the complexity and number of teeth involved.
