Dental Sealants

A simple and effective way to prevent cavities.

Understanding Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings made from a safe composite resin. They are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—typically the molars and premolars—where grooves and pits tend to trap food and bacteria. These areas are especially prone to cavities because they can be difficult to clean effectively, particularly for children who are still developing proper brushing habits. Once applied, the sealant forms a smooth barrier over the tooth’s surface, helping to shield it from plaque buildup, food particles, and acids that contribute to tooth decay.

The application process is quick and painless. First, the tooth is cleaned and dried. A bonding solution is then applied to prepare the enamel. The sealant is carefully painted onto the surface, followed by the use of a special curing light that hardens the material within seconds. With good oral hygiene and routine dental visits, sealants can last for several years. If necessary, they can be reapplied to maintain effective protection. Regular checkups allow us to monitor the condition of the sealants and ensure they continue to guard against cavities.
