Gum Disease
Protecting your smile starts with healthy gums.
Understanding Gum Disease
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is a chronic infection that affects the gums and the bone supporting your teeth. In its early stage, known as gingivitis, it causes redness, swelling, and bleeding gums. If not treated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth, leading to bone loss, tooth mobility, and eventual tooth loss. While commonly seen in adults, children and teens can also develop gum disease when oral hygiene is poor.
Gum disease and tooth decay are two of the leading threats to oral health. According to the Dental Association, nearly 47 percent of adults over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease, with the number rising significantly in older populations. Men are at higher risk than women, and the condition often goes unnoticed until it becomes advanced. Early diagnosis and consistent care are key to maintaining long-term oral health.
