Helping you and your family rest easy again.

Snoring: More Than Just a Nighttime Noise

Snoring occurs when airflow is partially blocked during sleep, causing soft tissues in the throat to vibrate. While it is common among adults and even children, persistent or loud snoring may be more than a nuisance as it could be a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Snoring affects roughly 40 percent of men, 24 percent of women, and 10 percent of children. In children, factors like missing teeth or changes in oral anatomy can also contribute to airway obstruction.

Typical causes of snoring include narrowed airways, large tonsils or uvula, sleeping on the back, excess weight, nasal congestion, and lifestyle factors like alcohol or tobacco use. Genetics may also play a role. Over time, frequent snoring can lead to dry mouth, bad breath, fatigue, disrupted sleep, and increased risk for cavities. If you or your child snores regularly, a professional evaluation is recommended to explore possible underlying causes and effective treatment options.

Identifying and Managing Sleep-Related Breathing Issues

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a more serious condition where the airway repeatedly becomes blocked during sleep. This can disrupt breathing and reduce oxygen levels, affecting overall health. Common signs include:

  • Loud snoring or gasping for air
  • Morning dry mouth or headaches
  • Daytime fatigue or difficulty concentrating
  • Behavioral or attention issues in children

Our office offers custom oral appliances to address snoring and mild sleep apnea. These include:

  • Mandibular advancement devices, which reposition the jaw to improve airflow
  • Tongue stabilizing devices, which hold the tongue forward to prevent blockage
  • Chin straps, which help keep the mouth closed (less commonly used due to comfort)

These devices are typically suited for adults or teens with developed jaw structures. If a child shows signs of disrupted sleep or snoring, we encourage early consultation. Prompt care can lead to better sleep, improved focus, and long-term health benefits.
